Menai Bay, off Zanzibar Town
A sliver of pure white sand that appears from the Indian Ocean at low tide and vanishes again at high, Nakupenda ("I love you" in Swahili) is one of Zanzibar's most photographed natural phenomena. Part of the wider Menai Bay marine ecosystem, the sandbank is reachable only by traditional dhow, and for a few hours each day becomes a private beach in the middle of the ocean, ringed by some of the clearest water in the archipelago.
