Southwest coast of Unguja
Off Zanzibar's southwest coast lies the largest marine conservation area in the archipelago: 470 square kilometres of mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reef, protected since 1997 by nineteen fishing villages who banded together to stop illegal dynamite fishing in their own waters. Menai Bay is where Zanzibar's resident pod of bottlenose and humpback dolphins is most reliably seen, alongside dhow trips out to the bay's scattered sandbanks and islets.
