Zanzibar Itinerary: How to Plan 3, 5 or 7 Days
How you split your time in Zanzibar depends on how many days you have - and the biggest planning mistake is trying to fit a 7-day itinerary into 3 days. Here''s a realistic shape for each length, plus where to go for a plan built around your actual dates.
3 Days: One Area, Done Properly
With three days, pick one base and stay there - don''t try to combine Stone Town and the beach on a trip this short, since the drive between them (around 45-90 minutes depending on where you''re staying) eats into time you don''t have much of.
- Day 1: Arrive, settle in, short walk or swim in the afternoon
- Day 2: Full beach day - swimming, a snorkeling or dhow trip if the area offers one
- Day 3: One half-day activity (spice farm, dolphin tour, or a Stone Town day-trip if you''re coordinating transport), then departure
If culture matters more to you than beach time, flip this and base in Stone Town instead, with a single half-day beach trip added if your schedule allows.
5 Days: Two Areas
Five days is enough to combine Stone Town with one coastal area without feeling rushed.
- Days 1-2: Stone Town - Old Fort, spice market, House of Wonders, a sunset dinner on a rooftop, a spice farm tour as a half-day trip
- Days 3-5: Move to the coast (north for nightlife and swimmable-at-any-tide beaches, east for a quieter pace and kite-surfing, south for dolphins and Jozani Forest) and spend the rest of the trip there
Build in the travel day itself - moving from Stone Town to the coast usually takes a half-day once you include checkout, transfer, and check-in.
7 Days: The Full Picture
A week lets you see more of the island without constantly packing and moving.
- Days 1-2: Stone Town (heritage, food, spice tour)
- Days 3-5: North or east coast for the main beach stretch
- Days 6-7: Either stay put and relax, or add a short trip south for dolphins and Jozani Forest, or across to Pemba if you want to go further off the usual route
With 7 days you can also afford one "nothing planned" day - Zanzibar rewards slowing down, and a week is long enough to not need every day scheduled.
Want this turned into an actual day-by-day plan using real, available listings for your dates? Use the Trip Builder - it asks how many days you have, your interests and preferred area, then builds the itinerary from listings on this site instead of a generic template.
