Nungwi vs Kendwa: Which One Should You Choose?
Nungwi and Kendwa sit on the same stretch of Zanzibar''s north coast, close enough that a tuk-tuk between them takes about ten minutes. Both share the same big advantage over the east coast: the water stays swimmable at low tide, so you''re not planning your day around the tide chart. Beyond that, they''re genuinely different trips.
Nungwi is the bigger, busier of the two. It''s a real village as well as a resort strip, with a working dhow-building yard on the beach, a wider spread of hotels from budget guesthouses to larger resorts, dive schools, restaurants, and a longer beach to walk. If you want options within walking distance - somewhere different to eat each night, a dive centre a few doors from your hotel, an ATM nearby - Nungwi gives you more of that without needing a taxi.
Kendwa is smaller and quieter for most of the week, built around one long, very photogenic beach with fewer buildings crowding it. It''s known for a stronger sunset - the beach faces west, so you get proper sunset-over-the-water evenings that Nungwi''s coastline doesn''t line up for in the same way. Kendwa Rocks'' full-moon parties are the exception to the quiet reputation - if your dates land on one, expect a livelier night than the rest of the week suggests.
Who tends to prefer which:
- Nungwi - first-time visitors who want things within walking distance, divers and snorkelers (more dive operators based here), anyone who wants a wider spread of hotel price points
- Kendwa - couples and honeymooners who want a quieter base and reliable sunsets, travelers happy to walk or tuk-tuk to Nungwi for more restaurant choice, anyone visiting around the full moon party dates
A common way to have both: base yourself in one and walk or tuk-tuk to the other for an afternoon or a sunset dinner - the distance makes that easy, and you don''t have to fully commit to one beach for your whole stay.
At the time of writing, this site has more Nungwi listings than Kendwa listings simply because more Nungwi businesses have joined so far - that''s an inventory gap on our side, not a sign Kendwa has less to offer. Browse hotels in both areas directly to compare what''s actually available for your dates.
