20km north of Stone Town
Long before it became a tourist stop, this cavern 20km north of Stone Town was simply a source of fresh water, until vegetation grew over its entrance and it was forgotten for generations, rediscovered only when a local boy went looking for a lost goat. Historians believe the cave's dark chambers were later used to hide captives after Zanzibar's slave trade was officially abolished in 1873, part of a far larger story told more fully at the nearby Mangapwani Slave Chamber. Descend the stone steps today to find a freshwater pool at the cave's lowest point, a sobering stop on any north-coast history tour.
