Kuza Cave

North Jambiani, east coast

In Swahili, "Kuza" means to grow, or to give birth, though the people of Jambiani have their own name for this place: Panga na Maji, the cave with water. Over 250,000 years, rainwater dissolving through limestone carved out a near-perfect 50-metre round sinkhole, its pool a startling three metres of crystal-clear turquoise. Run as a community social enterprise, Kuza Cave blends a swim in its sacred spring with Swahili drumming and storytelling from the locals who have long treated this place as sacred ground.
